The Open Hardware Summit is the annual conference organized by the Open Source Hardware Association a 501(c)(3) not for profit charity. It is the world’s first comprehensive conference on open hardware; a venue and community in which we discuss and draw attention to the rapidly growing Open Source Hardware movement.
Speakers include world renowned leaders from industry, academia, the arts and maker community. Talks cover a wide range of subjects from electronics, mechanics to related fields such as digital fabrication, fashion technology, self-quantification devices, and IP law. As a microcosm of the Open Source Hardware community, the Summit provides an annual friendly forum for the community. For over five years we have had an established fellowship which supports travel and admission for women and other minorities as well as hardship tickets for low income individuals. The Open Hardware Summit was founded in 2010 by Alicia Gibb and Ayah Bdeir with support from Peter Semmelhack and Bug Labs in its founding years. Claire Cassidy, Talks Chair – @lasermistress
Claire a self-taught hardware hacker/maker and open source hardware enthusiast. She comes from a background of running a small business making and selling accessories and art at comicons and sci-fi/fantasy conventions for over a decade. Currently, she works full time as a Project Manager for Crowd Supply helping makers and engineers bring their open source hardware to market, and part time as this year’s talks chair for the Open Hardware Summit. Claire is enthusiastic about the spirit of open source hardware and breaking down gatekeeping around anything considered “tech”.
Sid Drmay, Summit Fellowship Chair – @webspookie
Sid is a queer non-binary trans interdisciplinary artist who loves textiles, cyberpunk and snails. They work as the Community Coordinator for OSHWA, as well as Summit Fellowship Chair during OHS planning season. They are also co-chair of Dinacon and a freelance journalist with bylines in CBC, This Magazine and Broken Pencil Magazine. They are a passionate arts educator and zinester. They are probably in the middle of too many projects right now.
lee wilkins, Summit Chair – @leeborg_
lee is an artist, cyborg, and educator currently based in Montreal. they hold a bachelors from Concordia University, a masters from OCAD University, and currently are a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto. lee is interested in lasers, technology, outer space exploration, and building whimsical robots. Currently, they run community initiative and partnerships at the Milieux Institute at Concordia. this year they are Summit Chair and board member at the Open Source hardware Association, co-executive director at Little Dada, and secretary and board member at Pleasure Dome. You may know them from co-organizing events like Make Change Conference , Make Friends Meetup, Long Exposure Festival, Defcon Biohacking Village, or from being director at Site 3 coLaboratory. Lee is part time faculty member at OCAD University, Ryerson University, and Sheridan College where they teach electronics, programming, and wearable tech. they work with clients like informal and Alpenglow Industries to grow their communities, and co-chair the Digital Naturalism Conference. lee teaches electronics classes at places like inter/access and School of Machines, Making, and Make believe.
